Backpacking Trip

The time has come to decide when/where/how long we're going on our trip. Unfortunately, it would seem Andy will be unable to come as he has decided to use his vacation to go to Florida with Taryn.

Before we make any decisions, I have a few questions to bring to the table:
1. How much $$ are we willing to spend?
2. How much vacation time are we willing to use?
3. How far away are we willing to go?

Personally, I don't really care how expensive the equipment is because I'd love to reuse it multiple times. I'll take up to an entire week off and drive us all the way there in my car if that's a selling point for you guys.

  1. To answer your questions:
    1. I'm not willing to spend much. Running around Europe and hiking out west sounds fun, would be fun, but I'm trying to save up money to buy a truck, pay debts, and build up savings for other projects.
    2. I'll use some but not all my paid vacation. By mid may I'll have a week to last me until November.
    3. As far as the previous questions allow.

This isn't a good year for me to go nuts on a vacation/adventure. I'm hoping to get hired by Deere sometime this year and get the 20% raise in the process. Until then I'm not willing to go on awesome vacations.

If we wanted to go hiking we could consider local trails. The North Country Trail is a 4600 mile trail which passes through national forests in Michigan.

Ben, your idea to canoe/camp the Ausable River sounded interesting. I bet we could do the whole river in less than 5 days.

These are just some ideas. I was thinking of just going to my family's cabin on Lake George. Family is up there the last week of June, since the 4th is in the middle of the goddamn week this year. Expenses are gas, beer, and food. Haven't been up there in years.

  2. Alright, Rames. Good to know where we stand... I will look into how interesting the Au Sable river can be, as it is part of the Huron National Forest. What about somewhere else, like Sleeping Bear Dunes? I've never been there, but it looks like an interesting place to go for a quick Weekend trip.

  3. I'm in a similar financial situation like Rames. Just spent a lot of money on school loans and Ive been buying furniture and other misc. things for my new apartment (I've gone solo). I also don't think this year is the year for a sweet vacation (but perhaps next year?). Also; I'm going to use a few days vacation for Memorial day and I'm bringing Molly with me.
